Time To Move On – Yesterday there was the rumble that John Axford would lose the closing spot & today that has become official. This really shouldn’t be too surprising to anyone as we all saw it coming & some would say it should’ve happened sooner, even before the Brewers broke camp. Closers almost seem to be like most major household appliances. You know when both are about to give out, but you try to coaxes a little more out of each to make sure but when they’re done, they’re really done. I think Axford still has value to the team in relief but the Brewers just can’t trust his stuff anymore to close out games. Axford would appear to be a pretty nice guy, based on what I’ve seen/read, so I do feel a little bad for him but as is the case in all professional sports (and life in general), if you can’t do the job that’s expected of you someone else will. New closer Jim Henderson was quoted as saying he expects Axford to win the closing job back. At this point & after what we’ve seen both last season & this one from Axford, I hope Henderson performs in the closing role well enough that the question of Axford returning to it is moot.
