Ed. Note: Yesterday I shared my reasoning on my the Packers should part ways with Jermichael Finley. Today Kyle Cousineau refutes that, advocating why the Packers should keep him around.
Counterpoint – This might be hard to believe, but I actually disagree with Wally. I think the Packers should keep Jermichael Finley. I know, I’ve heard it all before. Too many drops. Bad attitude on the field. $8 million contract for next season. Loose lips to the media. Blah, blah, blah. At the end of the day, Finely is still a matchup nightmare. He demands respect from the defense and is able to exploit holes left in the middle of the field from opposing teams having to worry about Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb, and previously Greg Jennings. With Jennings basically long gone from Green Bay, I think Jermichael Finley can be an ever bigger aspect to this team. All season long Packer fans heard about the vaunted “Tampa 2″, “two high defense”, and “two shell defense” that teams were playing against the Packers to slow down the aerial attack. We also heard the best way to break down that defense is to target the holes left in the middle of the field. Who better to have hitting those targets than Jermichael Finley and Randall Cobb. Couple that with a better running game and the big plays that Mike McCarthy loves so much will eventually be even more open.
Like Wally brought up yesterday, next season is a contract year for Finley. I might be crazy, but for some ungodly reason I want to see what Finley can do when he is trying to prove his value heading into possibly the biggest contract of his lifetime. In Finley’s words, I want to see him “freestyle”. By releasing Finley the Packers also take the risk of him signing with a divisional rival. Couldn’t you just see him signing with the Bears or Vikings and trying to stick it to the Packers? Believe me, the last thing in the world I would want to see is A.J. Hawk trying to cover Finely over the middle of the field. As of today, the Packers have the cap room going into the 2013 season to keep him and extend their all-world quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. I know, I know. The Packers also have to pay Clay Matthews and BJ Raji, and sign the incoming draft class. I say give it one more year, see how it plays out. If he doesn’t get re-signed next year, hopefully you get a decent compensatory pick in the 2015 draft after he leaves prior to the 2014 season. Bottom line is I think having Jermichael Finley on the team helps you reach that ultimate goal…the Super Bowl.
