Well, Suppose It’s The Weekend For Him Too – Yesterday morning Donald Driver announced he will be hanging up the cleats & retiring as a Green Bay Packer. Everyone I’m sure has their favorite Donald Driver story & I’m sure we’ll be hearing many of them over the coming days. Whether it be a chance encounter with him while out & about, an on the field memory or even his Dancing With The Stars win, Driver has been a constant in our Packer-centric lives for the last 14 years. My Donald Driver moment happened this past year & actually didn’t even involve Donald but rather his son Christian, who played in the same flag football league I coach in & my son plays in. We were playing against Christian’s team & during a play my son Connor got roughed up a bit & went to the sidelines to be consoled by his Mom. I didn’t find this out till after the game, but during halftime Christian found Connor on the sidelines to check on him & make sure he was OK. That small act of kindness not only shows what a great kid Christian is but also what kind of people Betina & Donald Driver are, to raise a son who during the course of a flag football game went to see if a player on the opposing team was alright after leaving the field. While I’ll always have great memories of what Donald Driver did on the field but it’s that memory of something that occurred on a different field, where Driver wasn’t physically there but his presence was, that I’ll remember the most.
On a perhaps sadder note, we have the final weekend of NFL action on Sunday with the Super Bowl. After that’s done it’s nothing until next September. Sure there will be the combine, then the draft, OTAs & then Training Camp but no meaningful games for a while. Luckily college basketball is in full swing now, pitchers & catchers report pretty soon & it’s already February so we get past this month and it’s almost Spring time. Have a great weekend everyone & we’ll see you back here Monday morning.
