Sentimentality Aside, Not A Fit There – In Don Banks latest mock draft which was published last Thursday (and I completely missed), he had the Packers picking former Badger Montee Ball in the first round at 26. Now, the Wisconsin fan in me thinks this is pretty cool but that’s really as far as it goes. For starters, the Packers have more pressing needs than Running Back right now. I fully expect, which means Ted will do the complete opposite, to see that first pick used on someone like Jonathan Cooper from UNC (guard in college, would move to center is my guess) or perhaps even a tight end like Zach Ertz from Stanford. That tight end pick of course is contingent on what may or may not happen with Jermichael Finley over the course of the season but remember that even if Finley is here next year it’s the end of his latest contract & I don’t see the Packers re-upping him for what he’ll want. More to the point here, I also don’t think Montee Ball will come off the board in the first round, possibly second but more realistically third depending on how things shake out. Now, should Ball be available in the third round when the Packers are up? I would be rooting with everything I have for Thompson to draft him.
