Pocket Doppler Prognosticators – Week 9
Each week last season, the 3 Founding Fathers of Pocket Doppler (Wally, BigSnakeMan & Chris Richards), Senior Angel Colleen and favored stepson Rich would square off in picking the winner of the Packers, Sunday night & MNF games in an attempt to prove their football acumen and entertain. We’re going to make another valiant attempt at it this year. Unfortunately Chris had to bow out for this season (or happily escaped, take your pick) so Angel Kelly has joined the team. Like always, we’ll keep a running tally throughout the season.
Welcome to this week’s edition of the Pocket Doppler Prognosticators. Entering into Week 9 the current standings are:
Kelly moves into the solo lead (stupid Drew Brees) this week, while Colleen falls to second place. Everyone’s still very close though and there’s a whole lot of season left. At least we’re not picking the Broncos this week, so there’s that.
Cardinals @ Packers – Just when you thought it was safe to feel good about the Packers again, they almost laid a colossal egg last week against what is arguably the worst team in the league. ‘Survive and advance’ has a place in the NFL, and may even get a team into the playoffs. But it won’t win a division title and certainly won’t result in a championship. Sooner or later, a team has to play to its capability regardless of the opponent. With the injuries they’ve sustained and the uneven play of the offensive line, the question now for Green Bay is whether they already are playing to their capabilities. At this point, we’d still prefer to think they aren’t. Enter the Arizona Cardinals, who arrive at Lambeau Field as the proud possessors of a 4 game losing streak. Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy insists his team won’t look past this game to the upcoming bye week, implying that they may have done so in the past. Saying it and doing it are two different things, however. The Packers should be able to take care of business this week and hit the break with a respectable 6-3 record. Of course, that’s what we thought last week, too.
Cowboys @ Falcons – No need to overthink this one. Dallas is on the road; Atlanta is at home. The Cowboys suck; the Falcons do not.
Eagles @ Saints – This one isn’t quite so cut and dried. Eagles’ head man Andy Reid fired his defensive coordinator last week and Philadelphia “responded” by allowing 5 consecutive scoring possessions to the Falcons. After the game, quarterback Michael Vick suggested that Reid was ready to make a change at his position. Yeah, that makes sense. Reid presents all the appearances of a man who is quickly reaching his ‘expiration date’ in Philadelphia. I’m reluctant to pick New Orleans again after they let me down last week but they are a different team at home and the Eagles are such a dysfunctional mess right now that it’s difficult to imagine them being able to pull things together and come out with a road win.
BigSnakeMan’s Picks: Packers, Falcons, & Saints
Cardinals @ Packers – After an admittedly lackluster, although winning, performance last week I expect the Packers to come out with a bit more fire in the bellies this Sunday. I was at the game last weekend and have to agree with most that the crowd, minus myself & seat mate of course, didn’t seem that much ‘into it’. This weekend it’s a ‘Milwaukee game’ which always seems to result in a quieter crowd, but perhaps those fine denizens of The Good Land will take to heart what was said about last week’s crowd and step it up a notch. As for the game on the field, the Packers will get the win here before heading into the BYE week to heal up.
Cowboys @ Falcons – Will this be the game that the Falcons fall from the ranks of the undefeated? No, most likely not although no one expected the Colts to beat the Packers either now did they. It still won’t happen though & I’m confident the Falcons will carry their unbeaten record to New Orleans the week after.
Eagles @ Saints – Vick will still be starting this week for the Eagles, but it could very well be his last start, especially if the Eagles drop this one on Monday night. That is what will happen too as the Saints will win & help usher in the Nick Foles era as well as contribute to the end of Vick & Andy Reid’s days in Philly.
Wally’s Picks: Packers, Falcons & Saints
Doc gets a free pass this week because her husband decided to imitate Nick Collins. And not in a good way, so she’s a bit busy. Kelly gets the same number right that everyone else gets, since all the picks look eerily the same thus far…
Kelly’s Picks: Whoever has the most right ones.
Just as an aside, if you’ve never worked on a political campaign, you should, because people get crazy the last four days. Great people watching and entertainment. Also distracting to getting a post written.
Cardinals @ Packers – I will begin with my obligatory defense of Daryn Colledge, and saying I miss him. There, that’s done. Moving on, I expect this game to be much as the Jaguars one, with the one benefit to me being that I won’t be sitting in Lambeau afraid I’m going to see in person the Packers losing to an inferior team. (And yes, I mean that, because seeing them lose in person sucks way more than it does on TV, which is still bad.) No, this week I will be sitting safely in my favorite bar in Boise watching BigSnakeMan tweet his fears and still telling him to hush up. The Packers have this though.
Cowboys @ Falcons – Mike Silver commented the other day that the undefeated Falcons are getting almost no hype this year. I told him I felt the same way about the Packers last year and it was a good thing. He felt the Packers got more hype and maybe he’s right because I honestly hadn’t paid attention to the fact the Falcons even were undefeated. The Cowboys are the Cowboys….they still have Tony Romo and that says it all to me right there. (By the way, if you want to read a great book about the undefeated Miami Dolphins, read Mike Freeman’s new book. Fantastic.)
Eagles @ Saints – Well, while I hate to depend on the Saints for anything (and I mean anything), I think they will be playing well this week and Andy Reid has stated his commitment to keeping Mike Vick at quarterback. While I like Mr. Reid and I know he’s been through a hell of a year personally, I think he’s also just committed himself to losing his job. Perhaps he’s ‘self-firing’.
Colleen’s Picks: Packers, Falcons & Saints
Cardinals @ Packers – This matchup features The Battle of the Battered! Who can overcome a devastating amount of injuries and eek out an ugly victory(?), because this game is most certainly going to be a grind. Stingy Arizona defense, Randall Cobb as a #1 receiver, both teams without a running game… The one thing Arizona does not have, however, is the discount double check (i.e., Aaron Rodgers). Short week for Arizona, traveling across country, terrible QB play, both running backs hurt, no chance.
Cowboys @ Falcons – Jason Garrett may be the most inept head coach in the NFL since Mike Tice. Hey Jerry, if you want to pay me $4 million per season to be your lapdog and piss away games with terrible clock management, awful play calling, and an erratic game plan that resembles the electronic table-top football I used to dink around with at age four, then I’m your guy! Also, I’m pretty sure Dez Bryant is feeling the effects of karma. The thought of raising a hand to the woman I owe my entire life and upbringing to brings me to my knees. You hit your mother, your life if pretty much forfeit – meaning you, Dez.
Eagles @ Saints –
