Keep It or Lose It – Yesterday Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly weighed in on Ryan Braun & the MVP award, basically saying if Braun loses his appeal he should stripped of the award. Of course, Mattingly is most likely still bitter his own player Matt Kemp didn’t receive it, but I digress. I’m am firmly on the fence on this one because until we find out what actually happened to introduce the banned substance, whether or not the tests were tainted or who knows. I know what the Brewers fan in me wants, not sure if the baseball fan agrees with him or not. What do you think?

One positive test, one that is not believed to be for a Performance Enhancing Drug but for a “banned substance.” An incredibly high, unprecedented reading. Reports of a medical issue. A body that has not bizarrely pumped up during his tenure with the team. Clearly, there are extenuating circumstances, or at least reasons to give Braun the benefit of he doubt when it comes to whether his MVP should be impacted by the test result.
This doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have to sit for those 50 games–extenuating circumstances or not, the rule is clear. But there is little evidence that Braun has been using a substance designed to improve his on-field performance, let alone doing it all during his MVP season. He earned the award and should keep it.
As far as Braun being stripped of his MVP award, there doesn’t seem to be a precedent for that. I don’t recall Bonds or Clemens having any of their awards rescinded.
