Brewers vs. Cardinals - Game 3

Game 3 In St. Louis (Series Tied 1 - 1)

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter has been tearing it up lately. Since pitching a complete game shutout in Milwaukee on September 7th, 2011, Carpenter is 6 – 1 as a starter with 3 complete games and an 8 inning performance to his credit.

Carpenter also pitched in two Cardinals victories against the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS. His complete game, 1-0 shutout in game 5 is the only reason the Brewers are taking on the Cardinals and not the Phillies right now.

Let’s face it, the guy’s pretty good.

But take heart, Brewers fans. As a starting pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chris Carpenter has dominated NL Central teams over the past 8 years, with one exception: The Milwaukee Brewers.

Chris Carpenter is:

14 – 4 in 23 Starts vs. Cincinnatti with a 2.48 ERA (.204 BA)
12 – 3 in 20 Starts vs. Pittsburgh with a 2.78 ERA (.228 BA)
11 – 6 in 25 Starts vs. Chicago with a 3.04 ERA (.274 BA)
8 – 5 in 19 Starts vs. Houston with a 2.62 ERA (.224 BA)

But, against the Brewers, Chris Carpenter is:

6 – 6 in 15 Starts vs. Milwaukee (4.58 ERA / .270 BA)

Yes, the Brewers are the only NL Central team that Carpenter doesn’t have a winning record against. Individually, several Brewers have had pretty solid career numbers against Carpenter.

This includes…

Rickie Weeks – .600 BA / 6 HR / 1 BB in 10 Career AB (3 K’s)
Yuni Betancourt – .444 BA / 0 HR / 1 BB in 9 Career AB (3 K’s)
Mark Kotsay – .364 BA / 0 HR / 1 BB in 11 Career AB (1 K)
Prince Fielder – .308 BA / 2 HR / 5 BB in 26 Career AB (8 K’s)
Craig Counsell – .261 BA / 0 HR / 2 BB in 23 Career AB (1 K)

Other Brewers, not so much…

Casey McGehee – .250 BA / 0 HR / 2 BB in 24 Career AB (8 K’s)
Corey Hart – .237 BA / 1 HR / 1 BB in 21 Career AB (8 K’s)
Ryan Braun – .227 BA / 1 HR / 0 BB in 22 Career AB (6 K’s)
Jerry Hairston Jr – .214 BA / 0 HR / 0 BB in 28 Career AB (2 K’s)
Nyjer Morgan – .174 BA / 0 HR / 0 BB in 23 Caeer AB (1 K)
Jonathan Lucroy – .100 BA / 0 HR / 0 BB in 10 Career AB (0 K’s)

Interestingly enough, Yovanni Gallardo has never had a hit off of Carpenter (0 for 3 – he has walked once) and Carlos Gomez has never faced him.

That’s the good news. The bad news? Brewers starter Yovanni Gallardo hasn’t fared well against the Cardinals over the course of his career. He’s 1 – 7 in 11 career games against the red birds with a 5.66 ERA.

So what do the Brewers have to do to win game 3 in St. Louis? They’re going to have to score runs early, be patient at the plate and try to get Carpenter’s pitch count up. No first pitch hacking. No 6 pitch innings. They need to try to get Carpetner out of the game at all costs and beat up on the Cardinals’ questionable bullpen. It may be their best shot at stealing game 3 on the road.

And what about Yovanni Gallardo? What does he have to do? Easy. He’s just going to have to pitch the game of his life.
