The Milwaukee Brewers are one step closer to securing home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs thanks to a 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. An Arizona loss tonight could make that official; otherwise they’ll have to take the task to the final game of the regular season tomorrow.
Randy Wolf fought hard through 5.2 innings, but looked slightly off on everything he threw. He possibly could have argued the based-loaded walk that ended his evening, but it is what it is. Wolf has a 4.28 ERA in his last 5 starts, and perhaps the Brewers will get lucky in the first round of the playoffs and Wolf won’t even need to make a start. Not that he’s burned out; the rest of the starting staff (besides Greinke) have similar numbers over each of their last 5 starts. In fact, you could argue either Wolf or Shaun Marcum for the NLDS Game 3 based solely on their recent performances. But that’s for another day.
The story of the day rests with Prince Fielder. Fielder single-handedly carried the team to victory with 3 monster home runs. All 6 of Milwaukee’s runs came from the long ball, as Fielder and Rickie Weeks hit back-to-back in the 3rd, and Fielder hitting two 2-run shots in the 5th and 7th, both with Ryan Braun on base. Braun had himself a good night, drawing two walks and going 2-2 at the plate to remain in the lead for the NL batting title.
Lots of milestones to chase tomorrow as Milwaukee looks to set a franchise attendance record (they surpassed 3 million tonight) and hopes to open the NLDS this weekend at home.
