The Milwaukee Brewers snapped a huge home winning streak to the Pittsburgh Pirates, falling 9-8 in a game that took over 4 hours to complete.
The longest non-extra inning game of the season featured no pitching whatsoever from either team. The bullpen had one of the tougher performances of the year for Milwaukee, but the team was digging from behind well before the relief took over. Shaun Marcum got beat around early, as the leadoff hitter belted a home run for an early 1-0 Pittsburgh lead. The Crew kept finding ways to pull back even, but in the end it just wasn’t enough.
Marcum’s final line was 7 runs on 10 hits as he couldn’t finish out the 5th inning. Pittsburgh rarely wins in Milwaukee, but all good things must end. Marcum has had a lot of ups and downs in his last few starts, but will be well rested when his turn comes in the playoffs.
The offense put up 8 runs on 12 hits, so this loss can’t totally be placed on them, but they certainly didn’t take advantage of every opportunity they had. Most of their runs came with 2 outs, and they left a ridiculous number of players on base. In the playoffs, perhaps their luck will turn around in that area. There was no shortage of emotion as the team was pretty amped up during the rally. In the end they fell short, but don’t say they didn’t put up a fight.
Randy Wolf starts tomorrow as they hold onto hope for a home series in the first round.

[...] There were opportunities last night for the Brewers, but they weren’t able to cash in on them as they lost to the Pirates last night 9-8. [...]
Sloppy, to say the least.
Great points Milwaukee Brian. It is tough to criticize the offense when they put up 8 runs, but the crew will need to learn how to take advantage of every opportunity in the post season. Playoff pitching is so tough, can’t leave any runs on the field.
If I had been at that game, it would’ve taken every fiber of my being not to go on the field and slap Betancour(t) for (once again) popping up the first pitch in the 8th after Grilli had loaded the bases without surrendering a hit.
