If yesterday was a tough-luck loss, today would be a near disaster.
The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their second straight home loss to the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 in the type of defeat that could cause the slightest bit of panic.
Randy Wolf was a complete mess tonight, suffering through 5 innings and surrendering 6 of the runs, 2 off a pair of first inning home runs. The Brewers dove right in with a leadoff homer by Corey Hart in what appeared to be a night long slugfest. That carried for the Cardinals, but not the Crew.
Wolf’s day got better with a solid 2nd and 3rd but fell apart again in the 4th. He hit the first two batters and loaded the bases before giving up a grand slam to St. Louis’ pitcher. He played the 5th just fine and would have stretched on if not for his spot in the order. Marco Estrada the other two runs and Chris Narveson made an appearance out of the bullpen.
That one inning demoralized the team for the rest of the game. The crowd was energetic after a potential inside-the-park-homerun for Ryan Braun ended with Braun tripping over the bag at 3rd and fumbling to the ground. He shrugged it off, and the team chuckled a bit about the play. But the grand slam the next inning sucked out all the air.
Fans will be in for a long afternoon waiting to see if Milwaukee can avoid the sweep. Yovani Gallardo will start.
