The Milwaukee Brewers out-muscled the St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon, 10-5, to wrap up an 8-1 home stand.
St. Louis, rapidly becoming Brewers’ enemy #1, struck big in the early innings against starter Randy Wolf, but didn’t do a whole lot of damage after that. It helped that the Crew also struck early, with Corey Hart and Casey McGehee each belting first inning home runs. It was a monster game for McGehee, who hit 3, yes 3, home runs in all.
Wolf survived 6 innings after dragging out his pitch count in the first two innings. It’s good to see Ron Roenicke allow some slack to his starters, who no doubt feed off the added confidence. Wolf is 2-2 in his last 5 starts with a 3.24 ERA and 13 total walks, which has been a weak point for him. He is one of those guys who routinely gives 6 or more innings, which is invaluable to the strength of the bullpen.
The Brewers were in a deficit in the 3rd when McGehee hit another of his homers to take the lead for good. He capped off the 7th with a solo shot, and tacked on 5 RBIs total today. He’s had his share of struggles this season, and is certainly enjoying the weight of the world lifted from his shoulders. Hart had another big game, himself on a hot streak. Every position player collected a hit today as they send the Cardinals out of town on a high note.
Tomorrow is a day off as the Crew travels to Houston for a 3 game set. Their last road trip was a success, but they’ll face St. Louis in enemy territory before this trip is over. Stay tuned.
