How do you possibly make a sweep any better?
The Milwaukee Brewers took all 3 games from the rival Chicago Cubs, winning today 4-2 in their first game without All-Star 2nd baseman Rickie Weeks.
Longtime baseball fans in Milwaukee always cherish any victory over their close neighbors. The Cubs have struggled for the past couple years, and this year especially is a down year for them. But that doesn’t make the sweep any less sweeter for the Crew. Starter Shaun Marcum survived through 6 innings, surrendering the 2 runs and allowing 7 hits to a ragtag Chicago lineup that’s in the midst of trading a few players. Marcum labored early on, jacking up that pitch court before settling in a bit. Defense didn’t help out much, but when has it ever?
Ryan Braun led the charge for the Brewers. He hit a solo home run, drove in a run and scored another to help pace the way. The 1-2-3 punch of LaTroy Hawkins, Francisco Rodriguez and John Axford finished the final 3 innings, not allowing a single hit between the three. Axford got his 30th save of the season, and the way he is going, the sky is the limit for the young closer.
With Weeks expected to miss between 2-6 weeks depending on how his ankle injury heals, it’s vital for the Brewers to take as much advantage as possible of this favorable home stretch of games. The Houston Astros, dead last in all of MLB, come to town next, and Randy Wolf kicks off that series tomorrow night.
