Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.
The Milwaukee Brewers beat their neighbors to the south, the Chicago Cub,s 2-0 on a day when Rickie Weeks went down with a nasty ankle injury.
Prince Fielder lead the scoring charge with a home run in his first at-bat. Weeks got on base after Fielder but took a tough turn on his ankle getting to first base. Craig Counsell came on in his place and Yuniesky Betancourt drove him in for the only runs of the game.
Overshadowed by Weeks’ situation, Zack Greinke calmly had one of his best performances of the season. He went nearly 7 full innings, giving up 3 hits and walks each, and striking out 9. He felt comfortable enough on the mound to stretch all the way to 123 pitches, and clearly Ron Roenicke wanted Greinke to get the confidence of throwing a solid game. Takashi Saito finished the 7th for Greinke, Francisco Rodriguez did his role in the 8th and John Axford closed out for his 29th save.
As of 9:43pm, when I clicked the “Publish” button, the division leading Cardinals were tied in the top of the 8th. The Brewers are virtually tied with the Cards at this point. More important at this time, there are only a few details on Weeks’ ankle. Reports say it isn’t broken, but they are testing for ligament damage, hoping it’s just a simple sprain at worst. Stay tuned. (Update: Roenicke said that he is expecting Weeks to be out “a while”, but I’m sure plenty of extra news will become available.)
Shaun Marcum finishes the 3-game series tomorrow afternoon.
