The hot Arizona sun did it in for the Brewers.
Coming back to the stadium where a few Brewers competed in the All-Star game last week, Milwaukee got shutout by the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0.
The Brewers had a great chance to score early in this one, but Nyjer Morgan got tagged at home plate. Instead of potentially getting a run or more early in the 1st, they ended up with none all day. They got 1 more hit the remainder of the game, 3 total, and were just stunned by Arizona’s starting pitcher who went 8 strong.
Randy Wolf matched up well but got no run support whatsoever. Wolf’s last two losses have now come to Arizona, but this time it wasn’t because Wolf was banged around. He kept his command most of the game, but one ill-placed pitch turned into a 2-run home run for the Backs. He ended with 7.1 innings pitched and was stuck with the 3 runs, 2 earned. Tim Dillard filled in the rest of the 8th, and the Crew couldn’t give them a 9th to work with.
Just uninspiring for the offense. A team that has missed Ryan Braun for the last two games, Milwaukee just doesn’t have that spark, that energy that propelled them earlier this year. It’s still a long road trip, 3 more in Arizona and 3 in San Francisco, before they return to the soft glow of Miller Park. They need to figure this road issue out before it becomes even more damaging. Yovani Gallardo gets the start tomorrow night.
