No better way to hit the All-Star break.
The Milwaukee Brewers took a 4-3 game and 3 of the 4 game series from the Cincinnati Reds as the first half of the season comes to a close. The Pirates and Cardinals also won, so the Brewers keep their tie at the top of the division as they look to the final 70 games of the season.
Randy Wolf once again put up a decent start, running 7 innings with 2 earned runs. The 7 hits and 4 walks next to his name were much worse than it should have been, but that’s the way things have been for Milwaukee lately. Kameron Loe pitched the final 2 innings for the win.
The heroics came again late in the game for the Crew. With the Reds’ closer going for the save, the Brewers have everything fall into place. Mark Kotsay had been a 9th inning hero already this series and drove in Nyjer Morgan for the tying run. Craig Counsell, stuck in a nasty offensive slump, sacrificed deep enough to left field to bring in the winning run.
With Ryan Braun sitting out the All-Star game, it will be Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder getting the busy work, as both will do the game and the home run derby. The remainder of the team will get some rest, though they should be more eager to get some work in on their fundamentals. The defense has been the team’s biggest issue for a few weeks, and they need to get back to the basics.
After the break, the team heads on an 11 game road trip. They’ll start it off against Colorado on Thursday.
