The Brewers sure know how to keep things interesting.

Shaun Marcum pitched 6 innings after an early error lead to his 1 unearned run, and Milwaukee took the first game of the series against Philadelphia, their first road series-opening win of the season.

The 6-3 12th inning win was much more nerve racking than it should have been. Rickie Weeks and Casey McGehee both struggled at the plate while each had errors leading to runs, and closer John Axford blew another save opportunity to force extra innings.

Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy each had 3 hits to help pace the Brewers as they finally converted some runs from their high-powered offense. Instead of an upcoming starter having to take some relief innings, Brandon Kintzler pitched 2 for the win, and Milwaukee can now send Randy Wolf to the mound tomorrow against defending NL Cy Young winner Roy Halladay.

Has to be some concern about Axford, too. Considering that he almost literally came out of nowhere last season to establish himself as the closer after Hoffman faltered, the jury is still out as to whether he’s the real deal.
