Okay, I threatened the other day to go all NASCAR on you (at least occasionally), and while I’m sure there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, no one said they would run off screaming.

BigSnakeMan did question my lack of affection for Matt Kenseth, but that’s a little different and more understandable. PocketDoppler.com is a “Wisconsin Sports Blog”, so I will note Matt’s progress from time to time when I indulge in NASCAR blog posts just so I don’t get kicked out of here altogether. ;)

Since during football’s offseason the majority of my sports attention needs to go somewhere, and since I’m really just not a baseball fanatic, nor does my affection for pro basketball go much past being thankful there was something fun to do while I lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, I turn to NASCAR each year.

Racing is fun to watch (especially in person), it’s really hard to do (try to play NASCAR on a video game console sometime and see how well you do), and I love to drive fast (but years of high insurance premiums have sadly lightened the old leadfoot). Differently from other sports, I get to choose and love one competitor, rather than a team. I chose Jeff Gordon for a long time ago, and probably not for much else originally than looks and the fact he was pretty damn good.

Jeff’s getting up there in age for a driver, and as we all know, someday the older athlete rides into the sunset. So, differently from football, where the Packers are always my true love, I am starting to look for a second favorite driver. The beauty of a football team is it continues to evolve. The sadness of liking a single competitor is he ages.

Last weekend I found my guy. Trevor Bayne is 20, he’s sweet, enthusiastic, seemingly humble, kind of good looking and best of all? He loves Jeff Gordon! I can’t go wrong here. He won the Daytona 500 and that is a huge, huge win to come out of the gate with (Trevor’s second race ever in the big leagues). I may be premature, but I’m sold.

And? Gordon finished 28th and Kenseth finished 34th, after occasionally looking strong. Boo. Step it up, guys.

There’s a new kid in town.

Poor Trevor Bayne. When you win NASCAR’s crown jewel in only your second Sprint Cup start, there’s nowhere to go but down. He may as well retire right now. ;)

Oh, apparently Mr. Kenseth became the proud father of a baby girl today. So congratulations to the Kenseths. :)

“Hey, Trevor Bayne, you just won the Daytona 500! Let’s go have a beer.”

    “I can’t. I don’t have a fake I.D.”
