Close Enough – Yesterday Clay Matthews III was awarded the Sporting News Defensive Player of the Year .  Now, this isn’t the ‘official’, more recognized DPoY which is chosen by the Associated Press and which Charles Woodson won last year, but it’s still pretty good.  Consider it the Golden Globe to the Oscar if you will.  One has to think though that a lot of the credit for Matthews’ award and Woodson’s last year falls on the shoulders of Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers.  Not to take anything away from the talent and ability of either Matthews or Woodson, its Caper’s who continually puts them in the position to make plays and wreak havoc on opposing offenses.  With the emergence of Tramon Williams & Desmond Bishop, this defense will hopefully have Capers around for a few more years and continue to be one of the toughest around.

The weird thing is Tramon Williams could be the Packers defensive MVP. Having Williams has allowed Capers to use Woodson at the line of scrimmage more and more as the season wore on.
