If you haven’t noticed the debate about whether to use the word “suck” or not when referring to a certain Chicago sports team, you’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere.

I think somewhere along the way during the discourse I offended a certain writer with my opinion. That wasn’t my intention; everyone’s entitled to his or her opinion about language, behavior and parenting choices. I respect different points of view. I have decided, however, that there is a difference between being a journalist and being a fan blogger. If I have learned nothing else, I have learned that. I don’t have to take the lofty moral tone. I don’t have to be impartial. I love the Packers and I am passionate about them. That doesn’t mean that I’m rude or disrespectful to other team’s fans (unless they start it). I’m not even rude to beat writers. Except for when I took a picture of Greg Bedard eating a brat without permission and Tweeted it. But that wasn’t intentional. I was just excited.

To me, if you listen to the song “The Bears Still Suck” you hear a tone of affection and respect. In fact, the song points out that it’s “all in fun.” It’s sad to me that someone misses that.

And, to echo Aaron Nagler, my son said “Mom, vacuums suck. So do the Bears.” I’m okay with that. Sue me.

In the end, I decided that I could best express my feelings about that particular phrase through music. Here goes.

The Bears Still Suck (to the tune of “You’re Beautiful)

Their team ain’t brilliant.
Their team is bad.
There’s a song about their team
Packers fans think is rad.
We sing it really often
It makes their fans very mad.
It’s so good Wilde can’t make us
come up with a new plan.

The Bears Still Suck, The Bears Still Suck
The Bears Still Suck it’s true.
The sight of a Bear Fan’s face
With that ugly paint
Is a really awful view
St. Vince knows we’ll never be like you

Yes, we know it’s childish
It’s nothing personal
We’re just having some fun and keeping
Spirits high,
And I don’t think some people understand
We share a rivalry and respect that will last till the end.

The Bears Still Suck, The Bears Still Suck
The Bears Still Suck it’s true.
The sight of Cutler’s face
Taking up room in our place
Makes us drink more than a few
We’re still classier than you.

The Bears Still Suck, The Bears Still Suck
The Bears Still Suck It’s True
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
that the Happy Schnapps sing about you.

And it’s time to face the truth -
our kids think the Bears suck too.

(Yeah, I know. I’m not going to outperform Elton John anytime soon.)

Quality, quality stuff haha! I love your point about taking on the “moral tone” as a blogger. That’s why writing for a fan blog IS great. We are Packer fans, and we enjoy rooting against the “enemy.” Passion is a great way to describe it.

I write for the UW-Oshkosh newspaper as an even keel, take no sides, student sports journalist. There I will stay down the middle and be fair to both sides. But here all bets are off and all is fair game, I say.

Aw, you guys are kind! Wally actually gave me good editorial input on the moral tone thing (even if he did leave it to my conscience!) and I listened carefully to Weird Al Yankovic’s “You’re Pitiful” for the timing. If you haven’t listened to it, you should. It’s awesome. :)

    And the Bears Still Suck.
