White Sox Reportedly Have Interest In Fielder

The Chicago Tribune’s Mark Gonzalez reports that free agent first basemen Mark Kotsay said the White Sox are interested in possibly trading for Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder:

Sox free agent Mark Kotsay said on Jim Bowden’s XM Radio show that the Sox are trying to acquire a left-handed hitter, such as free agents Adam Dunn or Aubrey Huff, or trade for Prince Fielder in addition to re-signing (Paul) Konerko.

The Sox reportedly had talks with the Brewers involving Fielder during last season’s trading deadline, although those talks died down when Milwaukee asked about including infielder Gordon Beckham.

With Rickie Weeks at second base, Casey McGehee at third and Brett Lawrie making his way up through the minors, it’s tough to envision what plans the Brewers have for a player like Beckham.

Acquiring Beckham, however, would give the Brewers depth in the infield and would increase the possibility that they could subsequently trade a player like McGehee. As recently as Monday, McGehee was linked to the Oakland Athletics involving a trade for starting pitching by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

However, any momentum behind those rumors may have slowed after the A’s acquired Kansas City Royals outfielder David DeJesus for right-handed pitcher Vin Mazzaro and a minor league player.
