People Really Like Al Harris- Coming off the feel good win of the season, almost every Packers fans’ attention turned to the releasing of veteran CB Al Harris yesterday. I was a little bit surprised by the outpouring of angst and admiration so many have for Harris and his release. I have no feelings towards Harris as a player really, so am fine with the move and am trusting that McCarthy & Thompson know what they’re doing in this move. My real concern is that if someone goes down in the secondary, every Thompson & McCarthy basher in the world will jump on this quicker than…well, something that jumps real quick because Al Harris won’t be able to step in. All that being said, I wish only the best for Al Harris in his continued career and thanks for the memories, especially the ‘We want the ball & we’re going to score’ OT pick six to win the game against the Seahawks.

Even if I admit to being guilty as charged, I will very likely be among those irked should a CB get injured and the Packers are forced to play Bush, Lee or Underwood at nickel. I think GB needs more veteran depth, and they had an outstanding Packer Person ready to provide just that. Dave was right about something during the most recent podcast: I’d take an 85% Al Harris over an injured Pat Lee, or a full strength Brandon Underwood or Jarrett Bush
in the Packers defensive backfield.
I have been good with most of the decision Ted Thompson has made as Packers GM. Release Al Harris, however, gives me pause. I just don’t like the alternatives Harris’ departure leaves the team with.
For now I’m reserving judgment. I’m also nervous about the Pack sustaining another injury, but staff has watched Harris practice for 3 weeks so they must have reservations about his ability to remain productive as a 35 yr. old corner coming off a major knee injury. As Harris intends to continue his career, we’ll find out soon enough how much he has left in the tank.
