Excellent Afternoon Radio

I am an unabashed fan of Steve “The Homer” True. His radio show on 540AM ESPN out of Milwaukee (100.5 FM in Madison) is a great afternoon listen, particularly when it comes to Packer and Brewer talk. The Homer is at his best with guests that he has developed some trust and a relationship with on the air. It takes a while to develop trust, but once it is established The Homer is able to pull fascinating information from his guests.

This past evening, one of the late afternoon guests was former Wisconsin Athletic Director Pat Richter. Among the nuggets of information shared during the discussion was the story of how Pat Richter became the UW Athletic director in the first place. It seems that, with the pending retirement of Crazylegs Hirsch, Richter was promoting to Chancellor Donna Shalala the return of Bob Johnson to fill the AD opening. Johnson was living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and was lukewarm about a possible return to Madison. At the same time Richter, who was employed by Oscar Mayer in Madison, was heavily involved in the talks involving Kraft Foods potential takeover of Oscar Mayer. As that process went along, it became apparent that Richter’s position in the revamped company leadership structure would likely involve a move to Chicago. Richter did not want to move to Chicago.

Hmmmm….might there be an opening somewhere in Madison where Richter might be able to stay? Well, all of the sudden the AD position at UW looked much more appealing. Richter shared that he called Badger Bob to let him know of his new interest in the AD position and the rest is history.

Interesting stuff.

I didn’t know that story — interesting stuff.

Homer is very listenable. I prefer him to Mike Heller (Homer’s afternoon drive time competition in Madison). Not crazy about the “Rain Man” thing, but generally speaking Steve does a good job.
