Normally I’m not one to toot my own horn, but at the risk of sounding like Jim Rome, I have to prop myself on this one.  Ever since Brett Favre gained his release from the New York Jets, I have maintained that Favre would ultimately join the Packers rival to the west.  Through ‘retirements’ and declined invitations, I continued to remind doubters that training camp wasn’t over yet and it was still inevitable that Favre would return to play against Green Bay.

Today my steadfastness was ‘rewarded’ when Favre flew to St. Paul to officially sign a contract and practice with the Minnesota Vikings.

The only thing I now have to say to the Vikings and their fans is this:  Be careful of what you wish for; now you have to deal with it.

As of 9PM on 8/18, four hours after signing his contract, Brett Favre has been picked up by 92% of CBS Sportsline fantasy football leagues. The timing was impeccable…nobody talking about Michael Vick anymore. Congratulations to Roger Goodell on a marketing masterpiece. No one talking about the Twins miserable month either. The October 5 Monday Night game in Minny might set a ratings record.

As for the Vikes? I said it before and I will say it again…10-6 with him, 10-6 without him. Sure adds some sizzle to the season, though.

So, Jon, if I read this correctly, the Vikings just spent $12 million for nothing.

  3. Jon says:

They will more than make up the $12 mil in uniform sales, ticket sales, merchandise, and public relations by showing the public they are trying to win now. Good financial move.

The Vikings are about running the ball and defense. With or without Favre that will not change. Maybe Favre makes them more of a playoff contender…only time will tell. I thought the team should have stayed pat and started Rosenfels…now Rosenfels becomes the 2010 starter and this year’s backup who likely will play at some point during the year.

Just sit back and watch the show.

There was little doubt in my mind that Favre would play this season….but I stupidly believed he’d wait until someone’s QB was injured so he could come in and “save the day”. This proves that Favre was just playing us all. A West Coast Packer Backer I know pegged him when she called him a “media whore”. I’ll be in the stands at Lambeau for the 11/1 game. I can only imagine how loud the boos will get when Favre comes out in purple. This has been discussed before, Snake, dead silence would be a better greeting for Favre, but I’m thinking the boobirds will win out.

    Give yourself a tongue, Snake.

Favre isn’t coming back just to hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson. I’m sure that will be the plan going in but, sooner or later, Favre’s instincts and predispositions will get the better of him to Minnesota’s detriment.

Packer fans used to complain that Mike Sherman coddled Favre too much. After all the Vikings went through to get him, do you really think that Childress will be able to reign him in?

  7. Jon says:

Unlike most in Wisconsin, this is not an emotional issue for me…I would have been happy with Sage as QB.

Childress does not need to keep Favre happy, he needs to win and put fans in the stands to get a new contract. The Vikes have won in the past with sub-par QB play and would likely do so again with or without Favre. Yes, he will keep Favre in check because it gives him the best chance to win. Heck, Chili’s decidedly conservative play calling could keep any QB under wraps.

Look at the Jets stats from last year…they were a running team and not a passing team. Favre can’t throw it 45 times a game anymore.

Since 2005, over the course of the last 5 games of each season, Brett Favre has cumulatively thrown 13 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions. How’s that for dispassioned reasoning?
