At no point during the current season have I woke up in the morning and thought that JJ Hardy was one of the reasons the Brewers are struggling. His offense has struggled this year, but aside from last year he has never been a great offensive player. He is a tremendous defensive shortstop and next year when he is playing elsewhere I think he will be greatly missed. As Harry Caray used to so eloquently say..."but what about the pitching?"

If management thinks these moves are going to persuade a fan to part with fifty-two bucks for a decent seat at Miller Park, they've got another think coming. Spend that much to watch a team with no spark, and more importantly, no pitching? Pulling weeds is more fun.

I agree about Melvin; I would hate to see the franchise regress to where they were before he arrived. On balance, I believe that Melvin has done a good job given the constraints of the market. But if others are going to be held accountable for the success of the team, eventually that onus will fall on Melvin. He may need to reevaluate how he has put this club together.

I don't think there is any question that this is "window dressing for an uneasy fan base." It is a PR move to demonstrate their commitment to winning while satisfying some fan bloodlust for a season that looks to be spiraling down the toilet. Ownership wants to create hope as that keeps the seats filled, and these moves open the door to the possibility that maybe, just maybe, things will improve...and maybe it is worth renewing the tickets for another 10 pack next season.

As for Melvin and/or Macha on the hot seat, I suppose I wouldn't put that by Attanasio. It would be dumb, as Melvin has shown he knows how to build a contending team (and from the ashes of a 106 lost team, no less) while Macha hasn't even managed a full season. But keeping hope alive (and those seats occupied) might lead ownership to yet another desperate move.
