Cheer, Cheer for…

…an ol’ Notre Dame-Wisconsin football series. Recent discussions between the two schools have focused on a home-and-home series between 2012-2015, with details yet to be determined.

Wisconsin football needs some positive press and the addition of Notre Dame to the schedule, even though the games would be years away, certainly fits that need. The upcoming season is pivotal for the future of Brett Bielema as head coach, whether or not anyone in the athletic department states so in public. A Notre Dame series provides a long-term “pot-o-gold” for fans to look forward to, similar to a struggling franchise looking forward to a new stadium being built. Notre Dame is also a somewhat more attractive draw than say Cal-Poly, Wofford, or South Dakota. Bielema, even if he is not the coach in 2012, benefits short-term from the series with something to share with recruits. Season ticket holders might think twice about non-renewing their packages knowing that a Notre Dame visit is just a few years away. All good things.
Now…if the team would just play better in 2009.

Who knows? Both teams might even be worth watching by then. They’ll both most certainly have different coaches by that time. Of course, UND won’t be any less arrogant.
