QUICK HIT: Brewers Third Basemen
Milwaukee Brewers 3rd baseman Bill Hall failed to deliver in key situations against right handed pitchers in consecutive games this week. Wednesday night, Hall came to the plate as the tying run as the Brewers were rallying in the 9th inning against the Houston Astros. Hall struck out on three pitches against Chris Sampson, his fourth whiff of the game, ending the Brewers comeback attempt. Thursday, Hall came to the plate in the 4th inning with the bases loaded and only one out against Astros starter Roy Oswalt and promptly hit into a double play ending another rally. Hall struggled mightily against right handed pitchers last season and that unfortunate trend has continued into this one.
Apparently, Brewers manager Ken Macha promised Hall he would get a chance to prove himself against right handers in the Houston series, essentially implying that series would be an audition for Hall. With hot left-handed hitting rookie third baseman Mat Gamel called up from Nashville, look for the third base situation to become an official platoon by the time the Brewers travel to Minnesota for inter-league play this weekend.
