QUICK HIT: Egg On My Face

One of the “joys” of writing in an (almost) daily sports blog is that you are given frequent opportunities to be proven wrong.  When motivated to comment on the events of the day, opinions are often formed before events have played out completely.

On Saturday, I noted that the Tennessee Titans had signed Packers cornerback Jarrett Bush to an offer sheet a a restricted free agent.  At the time, I speculated that the Packers weren’t likely to match the offer and I was more than ready to bid a fond farewell to a player that had become a focal point of frustration for many fans like myself.

Well, lo and behold, once again Packers general manager Ted Thompson has thrown us a curve.  According to Bush’s agent Derrick Fox, the Packers have decided to match the 3-year, $4.5 million the Titans inexplicably bestowed upon Bush.  Unfortunately, the papers have been filed so it is official.  The Packers will have the rights to Bush for the next 3 years, should he last that long.  Supposedly, they were concerned about depth in the secondary given that both their starting cornerbacks are on the north side of 30 years old.  In the Packers defense, they weren’t alone in deluding themselves that this guy can be a solid corner.  Fox reported that 6 teams other than Green Bay were interested in his client.  I guess it just reinforces the idea that the average fan has no clue what enters into the thinking of NFL executives.  At this point, I readily admit that I can’t fathom it.

Hey, you weren’t alone: I thought JB would be gone, too. But if he were predictable, what kind of Assassin would Ted be?

I have always tried to give TT the benefit of the doubt, but I have to confess this offseason so far has me scratching my head. Apparently, he really does ‘like his guys’; perhaps a little too much on a team that finished 6-10 last year.
