Memo to Teams That Missed “The Big Dance”

Every year the NCAA Tournament selection committee announces what it deems to be the 65 teams worthy of playing for the National Championship in college basketball. And then we are subjected to the tired cacophony of whining from teams that are left out; usually led by the patron saint of such things, Dick Vitale of ESPN.

Well, here’s a news flash for you:  Life isn’t fair; never has been, never will be.  By now, everyone involved should know the ground rules going in.  The fact of the matter is that no more than a handful of teams have a legitimate chance of winning a title anyway.   Most teams have had 30+ games over the better part of the last 5 months to make a case for being included in the field of 65.  And, unless you’re in the Ivy League, even if you screw that up you still get a second chance by winning your conference tournament.  If you can’t find a way to make it in through either of those venues, you need to shut up and go play in the NIT.

    I didn’t expect UWGB in the field of 65, but I was surprised they didn’t even get an NIT bid.

      I thought they were more than deserving of an NIT bid but, more than the NCAAs, such things are often decided by what sort of interest they might draw to the tournament. And in the end, does it really matter?
