Marquette finished their regular season with a 86-79 overtime loss to Syracuse on Saturday afternoon. MU has developed a case of Wisconsin-itis of late, unable to finish and win close games since they lost Dominic James for the remainder of the season. Leading by 3 with under three minutes remaining, they simply could not finish off the Orangemen.
Marquette is 23-8 and a lock to make the NCAA tournament, but determining where they will be seeded likely will be a topic of serious discussion for the selection committee. Their current four game losing streak comes with losses to two probable #1 seeds, a likely #2 seed, and to the hottest team in the Big East in Syracuse. Losses to elite teams should not be too punitive, but they are losses and MU has not won since Jame’s injury. Prior to losing James, MU looked like a probable #3 seed. Depending upon how the Golden Eagles play in the Big East Tourney, my guess is MU will wind up as a #7 seed.
