It was painful — even more painful than the fracture in my aching left arm — to watch the Wisconsin Badgers get the ball inside repeatedly in the first half of this afternoon’s game v. Illinois and fail to finish. Is it a lack of confidence? A failure of technique? Or is UW just soft?

Whatever the case, it did not appear to be due to a lack of talent or ability: They were able to get the ball inside for good shots five times in a row at one point in the first half. But their failure to complete the deal in those instances seemed to send them spiraling, and opening the door for a 13-2 Illini run and leading to a 32-25 halftime deficit.

They need a phsyical center. I counted only one possession in the first half that they secured an offensive rebound. The lack of a center has left them vulnerable to backdoor cuts.

I don’t ever recalling Wisconsin having a big man in the middle. I remember having a conversation with a co-worker a couple or more years ago about this…saying it was the same problem the Bucks had at the time…no big body in the middle.

Brian Butch wasn’t a big man in the middle?

Well, I guess but when I say big man in the middle I guess I think of a dominating center like Oden was when he was in college

Maybe not dominating but, more often than not, Bucky has had at least one physical player in the post. Rashard Griffith, Paul Grant, Andy Kowske, Mike Wilkinson, and even Butch and Greg Stiemsma provided more of a post presence than anyone currently on the roster. It’s practically a prerequisite in the Big Ten and it’s absence this season is helping to expose the Badgers weaknesses.
