So…Dom Capers will be running the 3-4 in Lambeau. Let’s take a quick look at what this might mean:

Ryan Pickett will play the nose and Cullen Jenkins will man one of the 5-Technique (DE in a 3-4) spots. The other DE may well be their first round pick in ’09. Aaron Kampmann moves to a stand-up OLB/DE hybrid similar to Adalius Thomas in New England. The MLB spots will be filled by Nick Barnett and AJ Hawk, with Brady Poppinga starting the year as the other outside linebacker. The top defenses in 2009, Baltimore and Pittsburgh, played their safeties close to the line of scrimmage much of the time and Nick Collins and Atari Bigby may both flourish in that alignment. Capers will play more zone than Sanders and that may mean Al Harris moves on with Tramon Williams taking over opposite Charles Woodson.

A couple (if not more) of sticking points here. Williams did his best work as a ‘cover guy’ but often got lost when they went to zone coverage. And Barnett and Hawk weren’t exactly stellar in the middle last season. As I wrote to Chris yesterday, if M-3 was so enamored of the 3-4, he should have installed that D when he was first hired. Doesn’t inspire me with a lot of confidence.

This change scares me. I see visions of this transition ending up like going to the zone blocking scheme. We all know how that has worked so far. At least , I hope, it couldn’t get much worse.

Aaron Kampmann is no Adalius Thomas

…and Atari Bigby is no Troy Polamalu. But…neither Baltimore, New England, or Pittsburgh have a Justin Harrell waiting to take over at nose tackle.

    Ouch, Jon.

If I remember right, Tennessee played a 4-3 under Phil Fulmer. TT drafted Harrell, I assume, to be a 4-3 defensive tackle. Switching to a 3-4 does mess up what has been done in previous drafts unless there is some hidden confidence that Harrell can play the nose, Lee can be an effective corner regardless of front seven alignment, etc. TT and McCarthy it would appear did not have a long term master plan on defense.

Maybe they just figure that he can’t be any worse as a 3-4 end than he was as a 4-3 tackle.

Pickett will be great as the big fat nose in a 3-4. I like the 3-4 for competitive reasons within the NFC Norris. All anybody has done in the damn division is run the tampa 2 (although its been highly bastardized). I think the look will cause problems among division rivals and the flexibility will pay big dividends. I actually like Cullen Jenkins stepping back to a DT in this defense also. The Pack needs him on the field on every down.
