I would like to congratulate my alma mater UW-Whitewater for appearing in a fourth consecutive D-III football championship game. While falling short of a repeat championship will be a disappointment to some, they certainly have established themselves as the third best (some would say second best) football team playing in the state of Wisconsin.

Coach Leipold has faced adversity before and handled it with valor and class. In September of 1981, QB Lance Leipold was leading his visiting Jefferson Eagles squad to a tying score against the Edgerton Crimson Tide. Facing second and goal from the 2 yard line, the Eagles called for a sprint out to the right side of the formation and Leipold hit #35 with a pass right between the numbers at the goal line. Unfortunately for Leipold, #35 was wearing a red jersey with “Schleusner” written on the back…the interception was returned 40 yards (Leipold made a touchdown saving tackle) and preserved a Crimson Tide victory.

About 10 years later, I ran into Lance at a Badger basketball game and we visited for a bit. As we said our good byes, he grabbed my arm and said, “I still remember that sprint out you SOB!”

Congrats to Lance and the Warhawks.

    Nice job, Jon.

But, how come you were unable to score? Let yourself get tackled by the QB? Shameful!

I watched the game yesterday. My mentor graduated from Mt. Union and his son is a UWW grad — what are the chances of that? In any case, the Raiders have a machine and the Warhawks did well to threaten them in which might be termed a rebuilding year. This is a great rivalry, one missed by most of the sports nation. It was great entertainment yesterday, and I am looking forward to the next installment a year from now.
