The Downside to IF the Packers Actually Make the Playoffs

Should the Packers actually sneak into the playoffs this year thanks to the ineptitude of the Vikings and Bears there may be a downside – the complacency of General Manager Ted Thompson.  The general consensus in Green Bay is that if the Packers are going to compete at the “next level” Ted needs to wade into the free agent waters this off-season.  The problem here is…if the Packers do make the playoffs and actually advance Thompson may feel that he has the players in place to contend and go about his normal build through the draft and pick up some 2nd to 3rd tier free agents strategy.

The current Packers are not a bad team but they are most definitely not an elite one.  While I appreciate that Thompson wants to build via the draft, ignoring the free agent option is either ignorance, arrogance or both.  There are simply too many holes on both lines to expect the current roster to fill them.  In the upcoming free agency period there are some studs that can be found – Julius Peppers and Albert Haynesworth are the two big names on the D-Line.  Would Thompson pull the trigger on either one of them?  My gut says no but it also says that if Thompson doesn’t take some action in free agency this coming year he may not be the one pulling the trigger for much longer.
